Luke Plapp’s Ascent: A Consistent Performer on the Rise

Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) demonstrated significant progress in Grand Tour contention with a strong third-place finish overall at the 2026 UAE Tour, building on his previous second-place result in the 2023 edition. This performance underscores a consistent upward trajectory for the Australian rider, marked by a demanding early-season racing schedule and a refined approach to heat acclimation.

Building Momentum Through Early Season Races

Plapp’s form leading into the UAE Tour was honed through a series of races, including the Australian National Championships and the Tour Down Under, followed by competition in the Middle East. He secured a third-place finish in the Muscat Classic at the start of February, setting up teammate Mauro Schmid for victory. This consistent racing schedule has allowed Plapp to peak at a crucial point in the season.

Strong Performance on Jebel Hafeet

A key moment in Plapp’s UAE Tour performance was his second-place finish on the queen stage atop Jebel Hafeet, behind only Isaac del Toro. This result signaled his climbing prowess and confirmed his potential as a General Classification contender. The final stage, a bunch sprint in Abu Dhabi, saw Plapp finish within the peloton, securing his overall podium position.

Team Support and Strategic Racing

Plapp credited his Team Jayco AlUla for their unwavering support throughout the week. “It was an amazing week here in the UAE with the whole team. The boys took care of me all week and I’m super proud and happy to be able to repay them with third in GC,” Plapp stated. Sport Director David McPartland highlighted the team’s success in achieving objectives, including supporting Plapp’s GC bid and providing opportunities for sprinter Luka Mezgec, who finished eighth on the final stage.

Adapting to the Heat

Plapp emphasized the advantage gained from his acclimation to the heat after spending several months racing in the Australian summer. “I’ve had two to three months in Australia in the summer heat, and the Europeans obviously don’t have as much heat preparation, so especially when it’s hot, I really feel like that brings me up, or I don’t suffer in the heat at all compared to them,” he explained. He believes this adaptation allows him to maintain a higher level of performance in warmer conditions.

Focus on Consistency and Grand Tour Ambitions

Looking ahead, Plapp is focused on improving his consistency and translating his power output into sustained performance across longer stage races and Grand Tours. “I know the power has been there; it’s about the consistency and putting it together,” Plapp said. He acknowledges his 20-30 minute power output is competitive, and his goal is to maintain that level throughout entire races. His next races include the Tour de Romandie and the Critérium du Dauphiné as preparation for a second attempt at the Tour de France.

Plapp’s performance at the 2026 UAE Tour represents a significant step forward in his career, demonstrating his potential to compete at the highest level of professional cycling. His focus on consistency, combined with his ability to thrive in challenging conditions, positions him as a rider to watch in upcoming Grand Tours.
