Red Sox’s Devers and Bregman Saga: A Costly Miscalculation
The Boston Red Sox find themselves in a precarious position, haunted by decisions surrounding former stars Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman. What began as a potential power duo has dissolved into regret, with both players now donning uniforms for other teams. The Red Sox’s handling of the situation, marked by miscommunication and strategic missteps, has left many questioning the direction of the franchise.
The Devers Departure
The saga began with the Red Sox trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in June 2025. The trade netted Boston right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jose Bello, and outfielder James Tibbs III. Hicks was subsequently traded to the Chicago White Sox, and Harrison was flipped to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal for third baseman Caleb Durbin, who will be Boston’s starter in 2026. Neither Bello nor Tibbs are currently considered high-impact prospects.
The root of the issue stemmed from a breakdown in communication regarding Devers’s position. The Red Sox initially explored the possibility of moving Devers from third base, a move he resisted. Tom Werner, a Red Sox owner, stated Devers’s unwillingness to play first base when Triston Casas was injured was “extremely discouraging.”
Bregman’s Brief Stint and Exit
In an attempt to soften the blow of potentially losing Devers, the Red Sox pursued Alex Bregman, signing him to a one-year, $40 million deal. However, Bregman’s stay in Boston was short-lived. He departed in the offseason, signing a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs.
Werner indicated that Bregman’s decision to leave was largely based on personal reasons, specifically family considerations.
A Double Loss for Boston
The departure of both Devers and Bregman represents a significant loss for the Red Sox. Devers, a 29-year-old with a career .855 OPS, is a proven offensive force, even if limited to designated hitter or first base. Many believe the Red Sox would be strong World Series contenders with Devers in their lineup.
The Red Sox’s attempt to replace Devers with Bregman backfired, as Bregman left after just one season. The team underestimated the difficulty of retaining Bregman long-term, making the Devers trade even more questionable in hindsight.
Devers and Bregman’s Relationship
Despite the circumstances surrounding their time together, Alex Bregman expressed a positive relationship with Rafael Devers. Bregman stated he was “super excited to just be his teammate,” praising Devers as a “great player” and emphasizing a shared focus on winning. The two players were seen working together during spring training and even had dinner together.
Looking Ahead
The Red Sox now face the challenge of moving forward without two key players who could have formed the core of their lineup for years to come. The handling of the Devers and Bregman situation serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of clear communication and strategic planning in professional baseball.
