NYC Braces for Historic Blizzard: State of Emergency Declared
Recent York City and much of the Northeast are preparing for a major blizzard expected to bring up to two feet of snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding. A state of emergency has been declared for over 20 counties in New York, with the National Guard activated to assist.
Blizzard Warning in Effect
A Blizzard Warning is currently in effect for New York City until 6:00 PM EST on Monday, February 23rd. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and blizzard conditions. The NWS defines a blizzard warning as conditions where snow accumulations are expected between 13 and 18 inches and winds are expected to gust as high as 55 mph.
Snowfall Totals and Forecast
As of 5:00 PM Sunday, February 22nd, significant snowfall had already been reported across the Tri-State area. Here’s a snapshot of reported totals:
- New York City: Central Park – 10.6 inches; Washington Heights – 13.1 inches
- New Jersey: Wayne – 12 inches; Bergenfield – 9.4 inches
- Connecticut: Bridgeport Airport – 14.5 inches; Greenwich – 11 inches
The NWS forecasts an additional 10 to 16 inches of snow overnight, with potential for up to 2 feet in some areas. Snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, significantly reducing visibility.
Dangerous Conditions and Travel Disruptions
Strong north winds, gusting up to 45-48 mph, are expected to create blizzard conditions with blowing snow. Wind chill values will range between 15 and 25 degrees Fahrenheit. These conditions will make travel extremely dangerous.
Air travel has already been severely impacted. Nearly half of all flights in and out of New York City’s three major airports – John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty – have been canceled, with the possibility of further disruptions.
Coastal Flooding Threat
Strong east-to-northeast winds could trigger coastal flooding, particularly along western Long Island Sound and parts of Massachusetts.
