Oneida County Connects: Bridging the Digital Divide
In an era where the internet is fundamental to everyday life, millions of Americans remain underserved, facing a stark digital divide. Recognizing this inequality, Oneida County embarked on a bold mission: to bring high-speed internet access to every corner of its jurisdiction. This ambitious project, fueled by the $45 billion Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, promises transformative change for residents and businesses alike.
Tony Pharo, Executive Director of the Oneida County Economic Advancement Corporation, eloquently explains the driving force behind this initiative. "We knew that lack of reliable internet access was holding back our community,” he states. “It was hindering economic growth, educational opportunities, and overall quality of life.”
Partnering with Bug Tussel, a wireless company dedicated to comprehensive coverage, Oneida County has begun laying over 225 miles of fiber optic cable. This extensive network, slated for completion by 2029, will connect over 140 miles of fiber already installed to reach every household and business.
The project’s impact goes far beyond mere convenience. As Pharo points out, universal internet access unlocks a world of possibilities: "Imagine improved access to telehealth services, enhanced online education opportunities, and remote work potential – all while improving response times for first responders."
The benefits are undeniable. Access to telehealth expands healthcare options in rural areas, online education breaks down geographical barriers to learning, and remote work opportunities empower individuals with greater flexibility.
Oneida County’s commitment to sustainability fuels its long-term approach. Pharo emphasizes their pursuit of additional BEAD program funding and partnerships with other providers. "We also welcome the arrival of new providers and the competition they bring," he states, "ensuring residents choose the best fit for their needs."
Oneida County’s project serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating a proactive approach to bridging the digital divide. Its success story has the potential to inspire other communities nationwide as they strive to equip their residents with the essential tools to thrive in the 21st century.
