France Restricts US Ambassador Kushner’s Access After Diplomatic Snub

Paris – France has taken the unusual step of restricting U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner’s access to French government officials after he failed to attend a summons to discuss comments made by the Trump administration regarding the death of a far-right activist. The move signals a deepening strain in relations between the two countries.

Summons and No-Show

French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot requested that Kushner no longer be granted direct access to members of the French government. This decision followed Kushner’s absence from a scheduled meeting at the Quai d’Orsay on Monday evening, where he was to address concerns over a statement released by the State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau. Diplomatic sources confirmed Kushner did not appear at the meeting.

State Department Statement and French Response

The State Department’s statement, which was subsequently reposted by the U.S. Embassy in Paris on social media platform X, expressed concern over reports that Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist, was killed by “left-wing militants.” The statement asserted that “violent radical leftism is on the rise” and posed a threat to public safety. France24 reports that French authorities viewed the statement as inappropriate interference.

Barrot criticized the statement and defended France’s handling of the situation, stating, “We reject any instrumentalization of this tragedy… for political ends.” He added that France had “no lessons to learn, particularly on the issue of violence, from the international reactionary movement.”

Previous Diplomatic Friction

This is not the first instance of diplomatic tension between Kushner and French officials. In August, Kushner was summoned over a letter he sent to President Emmanuel Macron alleging insufficient action by France to combat antisemitism. NPR notes that a representative of the U.S. Ambassador met with French foreign officials when Kushner did not attend that summons either.

Path to Reconciliation

Despite the restrictions, the French Foreign Ministry indicated a willingness to resolve the issue. A statement released by the ministry suggested that Kushner could still fulfill his duties and engage in discussions at the Quai d’Orsay to “smooth over the irritants that can inevitably arise in a friendship spanning 250 years.”

Background on Quentin Deranque’s Death

Quentin Deranque, 23, died earlier this month from brain injuries sustained in a beating during a confrontation in Lyon. The incident occurred on the fringes of a student meeting featuring a far-left lawmaker, highlighting existing political tensions in France ahead of next year’s presidential election. The Guardian reports that Deranque’s death has turn into a focal point in the country’s political discourse.
