A Long Battle with Bipolar Disorder
Carradine’s family shared a statement with Deadline, expressing their profound sadness. They described him as “a beacon of light” and acknowledged his “valiant struggle” against bipolar disorder. The family hopes his experience will encourage open discussion and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
His brother, Keith Carradine, told Deadline that the family wanted to openly discuss his illness, stating, “We wish people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul.”

Carradine began his career with a role in the 1972 film The Cowboys, alongside John Wayne. He gained further recognition for his work in the 1980s Revenge of the Nerds films. More recently, he was widely recognized for portraying Sam McGuire, Hilary Duff’s onscreen father, in the popular Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, which aired from 2001 to 2004.
