Gaël Monfils Returns to Action in Acapulco During Farewell Season
Gaël Monfils is set to resume his tennis season this Tuesday at the ATP 500 Acapulco tournament, marking his return after several weeks of absence. The event is particularly meaningful as it falls within Monfils’ announced 2026 farewell season, his last year on the professional tour.
Facing Illness and Adjusting Plans
Monfils had initially planned to participate in the South American clay court swing, including tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, mirroring his schedule from 2018. Yet, a viral illness disrupted those plans following his return from Oceania, where he experienced first-round defeats in both Auckland and the Australian Open. He announced his withdrawal from the Argentina Open, citing the need for several weeks to recover.
Acapulco Holds Special Significance
Despite the setback, Monfils is eager to compete in Acapulco, an event he last played in 2009. He reached the final of the tournament in 2009, losing to Nicolas Almagro. He expressed his fondness for the tournament and its enthusiastic crowd, stating, “I wanted to relive the experience of playing in a place as exceptional as Acapulco… I remember the kindness of the public and the incredible atmosphere.”
Focus on Gratitude and Legacy
Throughout his farewell season, Monfils emphasizes his gratitude to fans and his dedication to delivering memorable performances. He acknowledges the support he’s received throughout his 22-year career and credits his parents for recognizing his talent and providing him with the necessary support to grow a professional tennis player. Monfils hopes to be remembered as a joyful player who consistently gave his best on the court.
First Round Matchup
Monfils will begin his Acapulco campaign against Damir Dzumhur, a player he has defeated in three of their four previous encounters. Dzumhur has also had a challenging start to the year, with multiple early exits in recent tournaments. Monfils secured a wild card for the Acapulco ATP 500, allowing him to participate in the tournament.
