Michigan Clinches Share of Big Ten Title, Eyes Outright Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 3 University of Michigan men’s basketball team secured at least a share of the Big Ten title on Tuesday night, defeating Minnesota 77-67. This marks the Wolverines’ first Big Ten championship share in five years, a significant achievement for the program.

Wolverines Overcome First-Half Challenge

Michigan (26-2, 16-1 Big Ten) faced a tight contest in the first half, with Minnesota keeping the game within four points at halftime. Yet, the Wolverines pulled away in the second half, fueled by strong shooting from beyond the arc. Michigan connected on 9 of 18 three-point attempts in the second half, ultimately securing the victory.

Cadeau and Cason Lead the Way

Elliot Cadeau led the Wolverines in scoring with 15 points, even as L.J. Cason contributed 14 points, with 11 coming in the second half. The balanced Michigan offense similarly saw contributions from Aday Mara with 10 points and Trey McKenney with 12.

Gophers Fall Short Despite Tyson’s Performance

Despite a strong performance from Cade Tyson, who scored 20 points for Minnesota (13-15, 6-11 Big Ten), the Gophers were unable to overcome Michigan’s second-half surge. Langston Reynolds added 15 points, and Isaac Asuma and Bobby Durkin each scored 12 for Minnesota.

Record-Breaking Season for Michigan

This victory brings Michigan’s record to 26-2, the best start in program history. The Wolverines have also matched a school record with 16 Big Ten wins, equaling the accomplishments of the 1984-85 and 1976-77 teams. Yaxel Lendeborg, a preseason All-America player, was limited to a season-low three points, while Morez Johnson scored just six.

Looking Ahead: Championship Pursuit Continues

Michigan has the opportunity to win the Big Ten championship outright with upcoming games against No. 10 Illinois on Friday, followed by contests at Iowa and against Michigan State next week. Minnesota will host UCLA on Saturday.
