The Northeast United States recently experienced a historic bomb cyclone blizzard, blanketing states from Maryland to Massachusetts with record-breaking snowfall. In Providence, Rhode Island, over 37 inches of snow fell, establishing a new city record. This event and the increasing frequency of similar extreme weather occurrences, is prompting scientists to examine the link between climate change and intensifying storms.

The Science Behind the Storms

Climate scientist Michael Mann, Presidential Distinguished Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, explains that nor’easters, like hurricanes, draw their intensity from the heat of the ocean. Even during winter, the ocean retains substantial heat, providing the energy and moisture that fuels these storms. Mann noted that this particular storm exhibited an “eye-like feature,” indicative of its exceptional strength – nearly equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane in terms of central pressure.

Is Climate Change Increasing Storm Intensity?

While the total number of nor’easters may not necessarily increase, scientists are observing a trend towards more intense storms with greater snowfall totals. Mann states, “We are seeing in the observations an increase in those intensities and an increase in those snowfall totals. And we expect to see that increase as long as we continue to warm up the planet by burning fossil fuels and putting carbon pollution into the atmosphere.” This intensification poses a greater risk of damage and disruption.

Policy and Preparedness Challenges

Beyond the scientific factors, concerns are rising about the nation’s ability to respond effectively to these increasingly severe weather events. Mann highlighted concerns about the dismantling of resources at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the defunding of scientific infrastructure, including the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). NCAR plays a crucial role in extreme weather modeling, providing predictions and risk assessments used by agencies like NOAA. These cuts, Mann argues, are “truly putting Americans in harm’s way.”

Rollbacks of Environmental Regulations

Recent policy decisions, such as attempts to overturn the 2009 endangerment finding – a key legal basis for regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act – are also raising alarm. This finding, initially established by the Supreme Court and later codified by the EPA, enabled regulations on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and fuel efficiency standards. The Trump administration’s efforts to reverse this finding were seen as a significant setback for climate action and the United States’ commitment to international agreements like the Paris Agreement.

The increasing intensity of storms like the recent bomb cyclone underscores the urgent need for both mitigation – reducing greenhouse gas emissions – and adaptation – preparing for the impacts of a changing climate. Continued investment in scientific research, robust emergency preparedness infrastructure, and forward-thinking environmental policies are essential to protect communities and minimize the risks associated with extreme weather events.
