Berlin Film Festival Director Faces Dismissal Amid Gaza Debate

The future of Tricia Tuttle as director of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) is in question following controversy over pro-Palestinian speeches at the closing gala and broader debates surrounding the festival’s stance on the war in Gaza. An emergency meeting of the festival’s managing organization is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, 2026, to discuss the “future direction of the Berlinale,” according to a statement released by Germany’s federal government commissioner for culture and media The Guardian.

Reports of Tuttle’s Dismissal

German newspaper Bild reported that the meeting could result in Tuttle’s firing, citing sources within the “Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH” (KBB), the state-owned company that runs the festival. But, KBB dismissed the report as “fake news” The Guardian.

Controversial Speeches at the Awards Ceremony

The controversy stems from speeches delivered at the Berlinale’s awards ceremony on February 22, 2026. Syrian-Palestinian director Abdallah al-Khatib, who won the Perspectives first film prize for his drama Chronicles From the Siege, stated that the German government was “partners in the genocide in Gaza by Israel” DW. The photo shows Tuttle with the crew of Chronicles From the Siege, some of whom were wearing keffiyeh scarves and one of whom was displaying a Palestinian flag DW.

Festival’s Response to Criticism

The Berlinale has faced criticism for its initial response to the war in Gaza. At the opening press conference, festival president Wim Wenders argued that the festival should remain politically neutral, stating that films should be “the counterweight of politics, we are the opposite of politics” The Guardian. Prior to leading the Berlinale, Tuttle served as the director of the BFI London Film Festival from 2018 to 2022.
