According to data shared by Council Member Givens, as of an unspecified date, there have been approximately 16,000 total encounters with ICE statewide since last August .
Specifically, the St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) has had around 15 encounters. Of those, 10 resulted in arrests on state or criminal charges, and five individuals were referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) . Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported 322 encounters, with 48 not leading to arrest, 158 resulting in federal immigration charges, and 116 leading to local or state charges .
Addressing Community Fears
Council Member Givens emphasized the importance of transparency, particularly in light of concerns raised by residents fearful of ICE activity. “They are fearful that ICE is going to come and knock on their doors and take them out of their homes,” Givens stated .
He clarified that SPPD officers do not receive funding from ICE and are not trained to conduct immigration enforcement arrests with the agency . “What we want folks to know that’s not happening here in St. Petersburg,” Givens said.
