Ebiye Udo-Udoma: From Beach Handball Ninja to Global Advocate

For every athlete, the time comes to consider life beyond competition. Some retire from playing altogether, others from the demands of both club and national team commitments, while some transition to different formats of the sport – a process that can be swift or gradual. Ebiye Jeremy Mabinton Udo-Udoma, a prominent figure in USA beach handball, recently navigated this transition, and archynewsy.com spoke with him about his career, his decision to retire from the US national team, and his ongoing contributions to the sport.

Discovering and Defining a Career

Udo-Udoma first encountered beach handball in 2014, learning about it from USA men’s indoor teammates who participated in the American Open Beach Handball Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He joined the sport in 2015, invited by Willard Johnson, and quickly became a key player. His international debut came at the 2016 Pan-American Championships, where the USA team secured gold and several of his goals went viral on social media, leading to the creation of his “@HandballNinja” persona.

Over nearly a decade, Udo-Udoma competed in over 100 games across 20 countries. He demonstrated versatility, playing as both a left and right wing before transitioning to a playmaker/centre-back. He also served as the primary shoot-out goalkeeper for Team USA by 2024, showcasing his ability to play every position on the court at a high level.

Udo-Udoma observed significant changes in the sport during his career, particularly in shoot-out strategies. He noted the increasing prevalence of defenders – traditionally goalkeepers or taller players – taking on the shoot-out role, exemplified by players like Andre Luiz Oliveira of Brazil and Adria Ortola of Spain. He also highlighted the shift in offensive formations, with specialists increasingly playing on the wing, such as Martin Vilstrup of Denmark and Filip Goricanec of Croatia.

Retirement and Fresh Beginnings

Udo-Udoma made the decision to retire from the US men’s national beach team in November 2024, following a friendly match against Canada after the SoCal Beach Handball Championships in August 2024. He described the decision as accepting an unexpected change in circumstances with humility and focusing on new opportunities.

Since retiring, Udo-Udoma has remained actively involved in handball. He launched a handball clinic in Nigeria, his parents’ native country, and returned to indoor handball after a five-year hiatus. He also played for the California Eagles, winning the North American and Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) continental championship and competing at the IHF Men’s World Club Championships in Egypt, even scoring twice against the EHF Champions League champions, SC Magdeburg. He also participated in the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup in Portugal and served as a correspondent at The World Games 2025.

Udo-Udoma emphasizes the value of leveraging his established brand, @HandballNinja, to contribute to the sport globally, appreciating the freedom to do so outside of formal organizational structures.

Advice for Aspiring Players

Reflecting on his career, Udo-Udoma offers advice to aspiring beach handball players: “You’ll become a legend as a competitor on the sand and creator off of it, but some people won’t fully understand your vision and that’s ok. Be ok with not ‘receiving your flowers’ and keep your focus on ‘cultivating your garden’ – give people grace, but never stop creating!” He also stresses the importance of understanding the rules of the game and building relationships with IHF referees.

He also offers a philosophical perspective: “precision beats power, and timing beats speed.”

A Career Marked by Resilience and Dedication

Udo-Udoma takes pride in his consistent participation, being the only player to compete in every US men’s beach handball competition from its re-inception in 2016 through 2024. He shared a story about living out of his car for the first two years of his international career, maintaining a low profile while traveling and competing with the national team.

Throughout his career, Udo-Udoma achieved numerous accolades, including gold medals at the 2016 Pan-American Beach Handball Championship and the 2022 NACHC Men’s North America and Caribbean Handball Confederation Beach Handball Championship. He was named MVP at the 2019 NORCA Men’s Beach Handball Championships and earned the USA Team Handball Athlete of the Year award in 2022.

Looking Ahead

Udo-Udoma’s vision for the future of handball is one of inclusivity, advocating for the sport to be as accessible as football, played on any surface and in any nation. He continues to mentor younger players and remains passionate about watching and supporting the growth of the game. He expressed joy in witnessing innovation within the sport, citing the example of Santi Vidondo of Argentina and his spin-shot technique.

Udo-Udoma extends gratitude to his family, friends, coaches, teammates, sponsors, and supporters, with particular acknowledgment to Willard Johnson, who introduced him to beach handball, and head coach Michael Hinson, who recognized and embraced his versatile skillset.
