IAM Spanish Leadership Programs Empower Members, Expand Union Reach
As the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) continues to grow and diversify, its Spanish Leadership programs are playing a crucial role in developing the next generation of union leaders and strengthening connections with Spanish-speaking members and communities. These programs, offered at the William W. Winpisinger Education & Technology Center, provide members with the skills and confidence needed to effectively represent, advocate for, and support their colleagues.
Program Details and Schedule
The Spanish Leadership I Class will be held April 19-24, 2025, at the Winpisinger Center in Maryland. Registration is now open to all IAM members and staff. Interested members should contact their Local President, Business Representative, or General Chair as soon as possible.
Additional Spanish Leadership programs scheduled for 2026 include:
- Spanish Leadership II: July 26-31
- Spanish Advanced Leadership: November 15-20
Curriculum and Inclusivity
Even as all classroom instruction, books, and materials are presented in Spanish, the curriculum mirrors the content of the English Leadership programs. The focus is on building core leadership skills, covering topics such as labor history, parliamentary procedure, the role of the steward, human rights, organizing, and government and politics.
Fluency in Spanish is not required to participate, but a basic understanding of the language is beneficial. The program is designed to be inclusive, creating a welcoming space for members who may face language barriers and fostering solidarity with Spanish-speaking colleagues.
The Winpisinger Center: A Legacy of Education
The William W. Winpisinger Education & Technology Center has been a cornerstone of IAM member development since 1981. Founded on the vision of International President William W. Winpisinger, the Center provides a dedicated space for members to approach together, share ideas, and develop solutions to workplace challenges. The first program held at the center was Organizing, August 4-14, 1981, with twenty IAM Staff from across the United States and Canada participating.
Expanding Language Access
The IAM is committed to providing comprehensive education and leadership development in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French. This commitment ensures that no worker is left behind and that all members have the tools and knowledge to grow, organize, and advance within the union and the broader labor movement.
