Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency Mandates Price and Nutritional Labeling for Free School Meals

JAKARTA – The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) of Indonesia is increasing transparency in its free nutritious meal (MBG) program by requiring all Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPGs) to display price and nutritional information on every menu item. The move, announced on Friday, February 27, 2026, aims to ensure accountability among food service providers and maintain the quality of ingredients.

Increased Transparency and Accountability

According to BGN Vice Head, Irjen Pol. Sony Sonjaya, the directive mandates that all SPPGs include detailed nutritional information and pricing on each meal provided. “Our directive is for all SPPGs to include nutritional information and price labels on every meal they provide,” Sonjaya stated at the MBG Talks event in Jakarta [1].

This step is intended to prevent practices that compromise food quality. By publicly listing prices, each ingredient must reflect its actual market value. Operational costs, averaging IDR 3,000 per portion, are allocated separately and should not inflate ingredient prices [1]. This measure is designed to make any attempts to reduce ingredient quality while maintaining a specific price easily detectable.

Addressing Concerns from Food Enterprises

The Indonesian Association of Nutritious Food Enterprises (Gapembi) responded to concerns regarding potential favoritism or harmful practices among SPPG partners. Gapembi Chairman Alven Stony clarified that investments in kitchen infrastructure and development are funded by the SPPGs themselves, not directly from the state budget [1]. The state provides incentives, but partners retain the business risks.

Stony emphasized that SPPG partners are committed to ensuring smooth operations and securing their investments, which include land purchase, building construction, equipment and wastewater treatment facilities. He also stated that pricing decisions are made collaboratively by the SPPG director, nutrition supervisor, and accounting supervisor, based on actual costs and established quality standards [1].

Background on the National Nutrition Agency

The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional) was established in August 2024 by President Joko Widodo to implement Prabowo Subianto’s campaign promise of providing free lunches for students and to address nutritional adequacy for vulnerable groups, including students, toddlers, pregnant women, and lactating women [1]. The agency has an annual budget of IDR 71 Trillions (approximately USD 4.542 Billion) in 2025 [1]. It is estimated that 82.9 million Indonesians will benefit from this program [1].

Irjen Pol. Sony Sonjaya also serves as the Chairman of the BGN Verification Team, responsible for accelerating the verification and validation processes for the MBG program [2].

Gradual Implementation and Future Oversight

Sonjaya indicated that the policy regarding price labeling will be implemented gradually, beginning with an initial order issued to SPPGs three days prior to the announcement. The goal is to improve quality and encourage transparency, allowing the public to monitor and report any potential issues [1]. While immediate sanctions for non-compliance are not planned, the BGN will monitor the implementation and address any violations as they arise.
