The tram, operating on Line 9, left the tracks around 4:00 PM local time (15:00 GMT) and collided with a building as reported by the Associated Press. Initial reports indicate the tram may have hit a traffic light and damaged a restaurant window before impacting the building according to the BBC.

Casualties and Injuries

Two people were killed in the derailment. One of the victims was a 60-year-old man who was struck by the tram as a pedestrian as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore. The other fatality and the majority of the injured were passengers on board the tram. More than 40 people were injured, with at least 49 hospitalized according to Areu, the regional emergency agency. Two patients were hospitalized in critical condition (red code) at the Policlinico and Niguarda hospitals, while 20 were admitted with yellow code injuries, and 27 with green code injuries.

The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
