‘Winter Sonata’ to be Re-Released as Remastered Film in Japan
The iconic Korean drama Winter Sonata, a pivotal force in the Korean Wave, is set to be re-released in Japan as a remastered film. This release commemorates the 30th anniversary of the drama’s debut in Japan and responds to long-standing requests from Japanese fans and distributors.
From Drama to Film: A Modern Update
Pan Entertainment, the production company behind Winter Sonata, announced that the original 20-episode drama, which ran for approximately 1,400 minutes, has been re-edited into a roughly two-hour movie. Yonhap News Agency reports that the “Movie Winter Sonata Japanese Special Edition” will emphasize the love story of the main characters and feature upgraded high-definition video quality.
A Legacy of the Korean Wave
Winter Sonata originally aired on KBS2 from January 14 to March 19, 2002, achieving an average rating of 23.1 percent in South Korea. Wikipedia details how the drama quickly gained immense popularity in Japan in 2003, sparking widespread enthusiasm for Korean content and significantly contributing to the rise of the Korean Wave – or Hallyu – in the country. Actor Bae Yong-joon, who played Joon-sang, became widely known as “Yonsama” in Japan.
Director’s Vision for the Remaster
Yoon Seok-ho, the original director of Winter Sonata, is actively involved in the remastering process. This includes upgrading the picture quality to 4K, adjusting the color grading and re-recording the original soundtrack with a full orchestral arrangement. Director Yoon reflected on revisiting the drama after two decades, stating he felt the script, acting, music, and direction worked together synergistically. Yonhap also reports his observation that the biggest societal shift since the drama’s original production is the rise of social media, and he hopes the film will evoke “pure and rich emotions” in an era where direct emotional connection is less common.
