The Matrix 5: Drew Goddard Offers Update on Sequel’s Development

There is still hope for a fifth installment in The Matrix universe. Drew Goddard, the writer and director tapped to helm the project, recently provided an update on the sequel’s progress, confirming it remains in development.

Goddard Remains ‘In the Writing Cave’

Speaking to Screen Rant whereas promoting his upcoming film Project Hail Mary (2026), Goddard shared, “I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t realize how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I reach out, I’ll have news to share.” This statement reassures fans that the project hasn’t been abandoned despite a period of silence following its announcement in 2024.

A New Direction for the Franchise

The fifth Matrix film marks a significant shift for the franchise, as it will be the first installment not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski, the creators of the original trilogy and The Matrix Resurrections (2021). Lana Wachowski will, yet, serve as an executive producer. Goddard was selected to write and direct the sequel, with Warner Bros. Executive Jesse Ehrman stating the story “will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success,” according to Screen Rant.

The Road Ahead

While the project is moving forward, details regarding the plot and casting remain under wraps. It is currently unknown whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. The Matrix Resurrections, released in 2021, underperformed at the box office, earning $160 million against a $190 million budget, as noted by Screen Rant. This may influence the direction Goddard takes with the new installment.

Drew Goddard’s Background

Goddard brings a wealth of experience to the project, having created Netflix’s Daredevil and written for films such as The Cabin in the Woods (2011), World War Z (2013), The Martian (2015), and Bad Times at the El Royale (2019). He also penned the screenplay for the upcoming science fiction film, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Reynolds, as reported by Cinema Express.
