Former Journalist Shares Transformative 1,400km Camino de Santiago Journey in New Book
Rennes, France – Jérôme Méar, a former freelance journalist from Rennes, recounts his deeply personal and transformative 1,400km journey along the Camino de Santiago in his new book, “Camino.” The book details not only the physical challenges of the pilgrimage but also the profound encounters and spiritual reflections that shaped his experience.
The Spark of Adventure
Méar’s adventure began in 2015, inspired by a friend’s decision to walk the Camino de Santiago. At the age of 46, he joined his friend for a seven-day hike starting in Figeac (Lot), France. This initial week quickly evolved into a much longer journey, as Méar continued walking the “French Way” to Santiago de Compostela. He describes the experience as a blend of spiritual curiosity and a desire for adventure. Ouest-France reports that he even left his phone charger behind, fully immersing himself in the experience.
A Journey of Encounters and Self-Discovery
Ten years later, Méar reflects on the lasting impact of the Camino de Santiago. He vividly remembers the diverse group of pilgrims he met along the way – individuals from various backgrounds, ages, and belief systems. Despite differing faiths, a sense of fraternity and shared purpose united the travelers. He recalls a pivotal moment crossing the Pyrenees with a group of German pilgrims, which solidified his resolve to continue. Méar particularly appreciated the atmosphere in Spain, where he felt a sense of freedom, and anonymity. Infolocale highlights that these encounters were central to his journey.
From Pilgrimage to Publication
Upon returning home, Méar found himself profoundly changed by the experience. Disconnected from his usual routines, he was overwhelmed by vivid memories of the path, waking each night dreaming of his journey. He felt a compelling necessitate to share his story, and writing became a therapeutic outlet. He completed the first draft of “Camino” in just a month and a half, initially intending it for personal reflection. Though, encouraged by friends, he ultimately decided to publish it a decade later.
