AI Transforms Indian Newsrooms: Balancing Innovation and Integrity

The Indian media landscape is undergoing a significant transformation driven by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Recent discussions at the WAN-IFRA AI Media Week highlighted the potential of AI to enhance efficiency, credibility, and sustainability within news organizations, while as well emphasizing the critical need to maintain editorial integrity and a human-centered approach.

The Rise of AI in Indian Media

The forum, a key event for policymakers, media leaders, and industry experts, centered on the implications of increasing content volume and the challenge of establishing viable business models for OTT platforms and news organizations in a digital age of abundance. A central theme was the willingness of users to pay for content, but only when they perceive continuous and meaningful value. Technology, particularly AI, is now viewed as a growth engine, enabling personalized experiences and data-driven engagement.

Key Discussions and Insights

Avinash Mudaliar, Co-founder and CEO of HT Labs, delivered a keynote address outlining these challenges and opportunities. A leadership panel, featuring Sowbhagyalakshmi KT (Director, The Printers Mysore), Mukesh Sharma (Co-founder & Dy CEO, Collective Newsroom), Tresa Sherin Morera (Senior Editor – Publishing & Production, Thomson Reuters), and Santhosh George Jacob (Coordinating Editor, Manorama Online), explored how AI is reshaping editorial strategy and long-term sustainability. The consensus was that AI should augment, not replace, journalists, freeing them to focus on producing high-value content.

Practical AI Implementations

The event showcased several real-world applications of AI within Indian newsrooms. These included:

  • AI-assisted coding workflows: Demonstrated by The Hindu.
  • AI-powered fact-checking: Implemented by The Logical Indian.
  • AI-driven OCR: Utilized by Sakal Media Group for advertising and sales intelligence.

A virtual session with Ezra Eeman, AI Expert and Director of Strategy & Innovation at NPO (Netherlands), offered predictions for the future of AI in media, extending beyond 2026.

Study Tour and Global Initiative

Participants also engaged in a curated Study Tour of leading technology and media organizations in Bengaluru, including The News Minute, CleverTap, NeuralGarage, Bamboobox, and PocketFM. This provided firsthand exposure to AI applications in areas like cloud infrastructure, audience analytics, generative AI, and digital newsroom operations. A pre-forum workshop empowered journalists and editors to develop custom AI-powered newsroom applications.

The forum is part of WAN-IFRA’s broader global AI in Media Initiative, which aims to support news organizations in adopting AI responsibly and strategically through forums, workshops, and peer exchange programs. Further global editions are planned.
