BYD’s Overseas Sales Surge as Domestic Demand Falters

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant, experienced a significant shift in its sales dynamics in February 2026, with overseas markets surpassing domestic sales for the first time. Despite an overall 41% decline in deliveries to 190,190 electric cars and plug-in hybrids, international sales rose by 41.4% to 100,151 units, according to CarNewsChina.

Domestic Market Challenges

The decline in domestic demand continues to be influenced by the phasing out of subsidies and the seasonal impact of the Chinese Novel Year. This marks BYD’s sixth consecutive month of declining sales within China. Although, the company’s strategic focus on international expansion appears to be gaining traction.

Sales Breakdown

Of the total vehicles sold in February, 187,782 were passenger cars and 2,408 were commercial vehicles. Within the passenger car segment, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) led sales with 108,243 units, exceeding fully electric vehicle (BEV) sales of 79,539 units. This highlights BYD’s diverse range of new energy vehicle (NEV) offerings.

Brand Performance

BYD’s core brand accounted for the majority of sales, reaching 165,013 units. Other brands within the BYD portfolio contributed as follows: Fang Cheng Bao (17,036 units), Denza (5,501 units), and Yangwang (232 units).

Moderate Decline from January

While the year-over-year decline is substantial, the decrease from January 2026 was more moderate, at approximately 9.5%. This suggests a potential stabilization as the company navigates the challenging domestic market and capitalizes on growing international demand.

Global Expansion

BYD has a growing presence in Europe, and Denza has already announced its expansion plans for the European continent. CarNewsChina provides ongoing coverage of BYD’s global initiatives.

Recent Developments

BYD has been actively innovating in charging technology, recently testing a 1500 kW Flash Charge system, nearly triple the power of Tesla V4 chargers. CarNewsChina reported on this development six hours ago. The company is also preparing to launch its Blade 2.0 battery technology, DM 6.0 system, and a 1,500 kW charger on March 5th. BYD’s Flash Charging app is now live as the 1,500 kW network prepares for nationwide rollout.

In January 2026, BYD reported NEV sales of 210,051 units, with exports exceeding 100,000 units, as detailed in CarNewsChina.
