Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi: A New Chapter in Smartphone Photography

Leica has been striving to gain traction in the smartphone market for a decade. Following previous attempts with the LUX app and LUX Grip, and limited Japan-exclusive Leitz phone models co-created with Sharp, the German camera icon has launched the internationally-available Leitzphone, manufactured in partnership with Xiaomi.

A Century of Imaging Innovation

The Leitzphone’s debut coincides with the centenary of the Leica I Model A, the first mass-produced 35mm camera and a pivotal invention in modern photography. This new smartphone represents Leica’s most significant advancement in the mobile space to date.

Xiaomi’s Contribution and a Shift in Mindset

Leica and Xiaomi have been co-developing smartphone cameras since 2022 Richard Lai. The Leitzphone is fundamentally a Xiaomi 17 Ultra, reimagined through Leica’s lens. Both devices share the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, a 6.9-inch HyperRGB OLED display, and a triple-camera hardware configuration. Yet, Leica’s influence is evident in the software, design, and unique hardware features.

Leica CEO Matthias Harsch emphasized that the design process prioritized the photographer’s perspective, asking “what a Leica phone should be” rather than simply how a smartphone should appear.

The Tactile Camera Ring

A defining feature of the Leitzphone is its mechanical camera ring, which encircles the circular camera module, mimicking the lens ring on traditional Leica cameras. This ring can be customized to control zoom, ISO, shutter speed, exposure value, or focal length, offering a more intuitive and deliberate shooting experience.

Advanced Camera System

The triple-camera system features a Vario-APO-Summilux 14-100mm f/1.67-2.9 ASPH. Lens. The main camera utilizes a 1-inch sensor with LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, enhancing dynamic range, particularly in high-contrast scenarios. The telephoto lens is a 200MP periscope module with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, providing continuous optical zoom from 75mm to 100mm with optical image stabilization (OIS). A 50MP ultrawide camera completes the setup.

Leica Looks and Content Authenticity

The camera app includes 13 Leica Looks, five bokeh simulations inspired by classic Leica lenses (Summicron, Summilux, Noctilux, Anamorphic), and a Leica Essential mode replicating the color science of the M9 for color photography and the Leica M3 with Monopan 50 film for monochrome. An I Model A filter emulates the grainy black-and-white aesthetic of Leica’s centenary 35mm camera.

The Leitzphone incorporates the Content Authenticity Initiative, utilizing a dedicated security chip to cryptographically sign images at capture, ensuring verifiable proof of origin via C2PA standards, addressing the growing concern of AI-generated imagery.

Design and Accessories

The Leitzphone’s design aligns with Leica’s aesthetic, featuring a matte black fibreglass back, a knurled aluminum-alloy frame etched with “Leica Camera Germany,” and the iconic red dot. It includes MagSafe compatibility, a faux leather case with a Leica lens cap, a microfiber cloth, and a red wrist strap.

The Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi is available for €1,999 (approximately $2,337) in Europe, in a single 16GB+1TB configuration. It is sold through Leica’s official website, Leica Stores, and select partners, but will not be available in the U.S. Undercodenews.
