Ryoji Ikeda’s Data-Cosm Immerses Viewers in the Universe of Data at 180 Studios

London’s 180 Studios is currently hosting data-cosm [n°1], a new large-scale audiovisual installation by acclaimed Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda. Originally commissioned by 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory, the exhibition has been extended due to popular demand and will run until February 1, 2026.

A Total Sensory Experience

data-cosm [n°1] is described as “a total sensory encounter that transforms vast datasets into an immersive audiovisual environment, exploring the intersection of art and physics on an unprecedented scale.” Visitors are invited to lie down on the floor and look up at a large LED screen covering the ceiling, while being surrounded by Ikeda’s intricate soundscapes. The installation charts data from the microscopic world of particle physics to the macroscopic scale of astrophysics.

Expanding on Previous Work

This new work builds upon ideas first explored in Ikeda’s acclaimed data-verse project, and continues his long-running exploration of the relationship between sound, light, and mathematical form. Ikeda is known for orchestrating sound, visuals, and mathematical notions into immersive experiences. He has been collaborating with 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory since 2015, with previous exhibitions including supersymmetry and test pattern.

About Ryoji Ikeda

Ryoji Ikeda, born in 1965 in Gifu, Japan, is a leading composer and visual artist. He focuses on the essential characteristics of sound and visuals, utilizing mathematical precision and aesthetics. He is considered one of the most innovative musicians of contemporary electronic music, though in the UK he is primarily recognized as a video installation artist.
