Dave Rennie Named All Blacks Coach, Succeeding Scott Robertson
Former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has been appointed as the new head coach of the All Blacks, New Zealand Rugby announced on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. He will lead the team through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia .
Succession Following Scott Robertson’s Departure
Rennie replaces Scott Robertson, who left the role unexpectedly in January following an end-of-season review. Robertson had a successful tenure, winning 20 of 27 Tests in charge .
Rennie’s Previous Experience
The 62-year-old New Zealander previously coached the Wallabies for three seasons before being removed in early 2023. His time with Australia ended after a series of inconsistent results, including a historic loss to Italy . Prior to his role with the Wallabies, Rennie led the Chiefs to consecutive Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013 .
A Historic Appointment
Rennie becomes the first All Blacks head coach with Pasifika heritage . He is currently coaching in Japan with the Kobelco Kobe Steelers and will join the All Blacks ahead of their domestic Tests in July .

“Coaching the All Blacks is an incredible honour,” Rennie said in a New Zealand Rugby statement. “I’m extremely proud to have been entrusted with this role and understand the expectations that come with it. I’m really clear on the way I want the All Blacks to play and I look forward to working with the players, management team and the rugby community. We have a lot of talent here and we will be working extremely hard to make the country proud.”
Looking Ahead
Rennie’s immediate focus will be preparing the All Blacks for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be held in Australia. He will return to New Zealand from Japan to initiate preparations for the July domestic Tests .
