Sybrand Buma Poised to Grow Vice President of the Council of State
Sybrand van Haersma Buma, the current Mayor of Leeuwarden and former leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), is the leading candidate to become the next Vice President of the Council of State in the Netherlands. The appointment, expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, would see him succeed Thom de Graaf of D66, who is departing at the end of the summer.
A Veteran of Dutch Politics and Law
Buma’s career spans both law and politics. He began his career as a jurist at the Council of State in 1990, later serving at the Ministry of the Interior. He entered the House of Representatives in 2002 as a member of the CDA, and rose to become the party’s parliamentary leader in 2010 and leader in 2012. He served as a member of the House of Representatives until 2019.
The Role of the Council of State
The Council of State holds a crucial position within the Dutch government. It serves as the primary advisory body for the cabinet, reviewing legislation before it is presented to the States-General. It as well houses the highest administrative court in the Netherlands. The Vice Presidency is considered one of the most prominent public functions in the country.
A Politically Aligned Appointment
Traditionally, the Vice Presidency of the Council of State is filled by individuals affiliated with parties within the governing coalition, although the position is formally open to applications. Buma’s experience as an informateur during recent cabinet formation talks, where he facilitated an agreement between D66 and CDA, highlights his ability to navigate complex political landscapes.
Friesland Roots and Family Tradition
Buma’s appointment would also represent a continuation of his family’s history of public service in Friesland. He hails from an established Friesland family and his father and grandfather both served as mayors in the region. His current role as Mayor of Leeuwarden aligns with this familial tradition.
