National Symphony Orchestra Director Resigns Amidst Turmoil at the Trump-Kennedy Center

Gene Davidson, executive director and general manager of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), has resigned from his position at the Kennedy Center, effective in May. The departure follows a period of significant change and controversy at the institution, now officially named the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Leadership Changes and Artistic Cancellations

Davidson will transition to the role of CEO at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, California. He had intended to remain with the NSO through its centennial in 2031, but cited “external factors beyond my control” as contributing to his decision to seek a new opportunity according to the New York Times.

The resignation comes after a series of disruptions at the Kennedy Center following former President Trump’s increased involvement. Trump appointed himself chairman of the Kennedy Center and personally selected its board of directors last year, leading to the renaming of the institution in December 2025 as reported by NPR.

Several artists protested the changes. Jazz drummer Chuck Red canceled a Christmas Eve performance and composer Philip Glass withdrew the premiere of his “Lincoln Symphony” as the New York Times reported. The Washington National Opera also terminated its 55-year partnership with the Kennedy Center earlier this year.

Financial Impact and Future Plans

The Kennedy Center has experienced a decline in attendance and announced plans for a two-year closure starting in July for renovations according to the New York Times. Davidson oversaw an annual budget of $42 million for the National Symphony Orchestra, managing sponsorship, fundraising, and audience development.

Trump’s Involvement and the Kennedy Center Honors

President Trump has publicly criticized the Kennedy Center’s condition and vowed to restore it to “the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment” as Newsweek reported. He also hosted the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2025, joking about the venue’s name according to the Associated Press, honoring artists including KISS, Gloria Gaynor, and Sylvester Stallone.
