Avalanche at Helligvatnet Lake: Search for Missing French Hiker Transitions to Recovery Operation
Narvik, Norway – March 7, 2026 – The search for a missing French hiker near Helligvatnet Lake in Nordland county, Norway, has transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery effort, authorities announced Saturday. The decision comes as avalanche danger in the area remains high, posing significant risks to rescue personnel.
Avalanche Details and Initial Response
The avalanche occurred Friday afternoon in the area surrounding Helligvatnet Lake, located between Beisfjord and the Swedish border. A group of three French tourists was caught in the slide. Two members of the group were able to reach safety and alerted authorities, whereas one remains missing. According to Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), the two hikers initially searched for their companion for an hour before reporting the avalanche to the police.
High Avalanche Risk Hampers Search Efforts
Emergency services initiated a search operation Friday evening, but were forced to scale back efforts Saturday morning due to the extreme avalanche risk. The Nordland police district stated that the avalanche danger is currently rated as a 4, indicating extensive unstable conditions and a high probability of naturally triggered landslides.
“The risk of avalanches is considered too great for us to expose search crews to the risk of being in avalanche-prone terrain,” said Bent Are Eilertsen, chief of staff in the Nordland police district.
Transition to Recovery Operation
At 12:53 PM local time on Saturday, police announced they were switching to a search for the presumed deceased. VG reports that it is no longer considered safe to send ground crews into the area.
Authorities are planning to conduct an aerial search of the avalanche area using a helicopter to attempt to locate the missing hiker. The avalanche is described as being over 200 meters wide, with significant debris impacting the ice, and a continued risk of further slides.
Warnings to the Public
Police are urging the public to avoid travel in the mountains given the current danger level 4 avalanche warning. “The police encourage the public to consider whether it is necessary to travel in the mountains when there is danger level 4 for avalanches,” authorities stated.
