Dubai, UAE – March 7, 2026 – The Aga Khan Foundation has committed $100 million (Dh367 million) over the next five years to address malnutrition, joining the ‘Edge of Life’ campaign launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative aims to rescue five million children from hunger worldwide.
Partnership with the UAE
The pledge was announced during a Suhoor event hosted by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), bringing together philanthropic and business leaders. His Excellency Badr Jafar, the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Business and Philanthropy, also participated in the event, held at the Armani Dubai Hotel, Burj Khalifa.
Expanding the Aga Khan Development Network’s Efforts
This commitment represents a significant expansion of the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) ongoing work to improve nutrition and food systems in Asia and Africa. The funds will be directed towards preventing malnutrition in South and Central Asia, Eastern Africa, and Syria.
A Message of Solidarity
Speaking on behalf of His Highness the Aga Khan, a representative conveyed a message of solidarity and partnership to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the people of the United Arab Emirates. The Aga Khan expressed condolences for those affected by the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and offered prayers for a swift and peaceful resolution.
Recognizing UAE Leadership
The Aga Khan Foundation commended Sheikh Mohammed’s vision and generosity in leading efforts to save millions of lives and alleviate the suffering caused by malnutrition. The Foundation acknowledged the UAE’s role in providing support to disadvantaged communities and underprivileged societies, particularly in Africa and Asia.
Addressing a Global Challenge
His Highness the Aga Khan stated, “Malnutrition remains one of the greatest barriers to human development, undermining the health, potential and dignity of millions of children and families. Addressing this challenge requires sustained commitment and collective action. I am honoured to join His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, and all the partners he has gathered, in supporting efforts to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow, to thrive and to contribute to their communities.”
Previous Collaboration
This latest pledge more than doubles the Aga Khan Foundation’s previous commitments to addressing malnutrition. In January 2018, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum received the Aga Khan at the Zabeel Palace during the Aga Khan’s Diamond Jubilee visit to the UAE, where they discussed increased cooperation in areas of common interest, including global development and cross-cultural exchange [Source: AKDN].
