Olbia Lawyer Recovers Stolen Wallet After Confronting Thieves

Olbia, Sardinia – Alessandro Lupacciolu, a lawyer based in Olbia, experienced a harrowing ordeal earlier this week when his wallet was stolen and subsequently used to produce unauthorized purchases. The incident unfolded in the historic center of Olbia, prompting a swift response from Lupacciolu that led to a confrontation with the alleged thieves.

The Discovery of the Theft

Lupacciolu first became aware of the theft through a series of payment notifications appearing on his mobile phone. He hadn’t made any purchases himself, immediately realizing his wallet, which he believes he inadvertently left on the roof of his car whereas parking near the train station, had fallen into the wrong hands. Returning to the parking area, he found the wallet was gone.

Tracking the Thieves

Shortly after, a 20 euro withdrawal notification from an ATM in Piazza Regina Margherita alerted Lupacciolu to the thieves’ activity. Instead of immediately blocking his card, he proceeded to the ATM, where he learned from a tobacconist that three young men had recently made the withdrawal. While searching for the individuals, another notification from the same ATM prompted him to scan the crowd on Corso Umberto. He identified three individuals matching the description provided by the tobacconist.

Confrontation and Police Intervention

Lupacciolu confronted the three young men, attempting to detain them. He managed to grab one by the hood and another by the neck. One of the suspects managed to escape, while Lupacciolu held the other until the arrival of the police – local police and carabinieri. The detained individual, described as being of Maghrebi origin, remained silent when questioned by authorities. Due to lack of evidence, police were unable to proceed with any arrests.

Wallet Recovered, Cash Missing

A few days later, Lupacciolu’s wallet was recovered, though it was empty of cash and its credit cards had been folded. He expressed relief at the wallet’s return but noted this was the first time in 48 years he had experienced such an incident. He emphasized his intent was simply to recover his stolen property, stating, “On my part there was no punitive or even aggressive desire…My only intent, at that moment, was to react to an injustice suffered, to regain possession of what had been stolen from me.”

A Recurring Issue

Lupacciolu revealed that he had previously lost his wallet in the center of Olbia at least five times in the past two years, but on those occasions, it was always returned to him by fellow citizens with the contents intact. This incident marked a departure from that positive experience.

Reflecting on the event, Lupacciolu acknowledged the risk he took, stating, “I didn’t think about it when I rushed to catch them. They might have had a weapon too.”
