Novak Djokovic Battles Through Opening Round at Indian Wells, Briefly Vomits on Court

Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Saturday, defeating Kamil Majchrzak 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. The 38-year-aged Serbian faced a challenge in the first set and a concerning health scare during the match, but ultimately secured the victory.

First-Set Struggle and Second-Set Recovery

Djokovic dropped the first set 4-6, struggling to find his rhythm against Majchrzak. However, he rebounded strongly, winning the second set 6-1 and the third 6-2. He attributed the initial difficulty to a lack of match play, having not competed since the Australian Open final in early February. “I hadn’t played a match in five weeks, since the Australian Open final,” Djokovic explained. “Most of the other players have played multiple tournaments this year. So I knew the first match would be a little rusty for me, but after losing the first set I kept believing I could arrive back and I found my best game since the beginning of the second and then I never looked back.”

Brief Illness on Court

During a lengthy rally of 43 shots in the third set, Djokovic briefly became ill and vomited behind the court barrier. He quickly recovered and continued playing without apparent further issue, ultimately winning five games in a row to close out the match.

Tournament History and Next Opponent

Djokovic is a five-time Indian Wells champion, but has faced difficulties at the tournament in recent years, failing to reach the fourth round since 2017. His past defeats include losses to Taro Daniel, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Luca Nardi, and Botic van de Zandschulp. He will now face American Kovacevic in the third round. At 38, Djokovic is the second-oldest man to reach the third round at Indian Wells, trailing only Ivo Karlovic, who achieved this at age 40 in 2019.

Windy Conditions

Gusty winds in the California desert added to the challenge for Djokovic, impacting his baseline rhythm early in the match. Despite the conditions, he was able to overcome the adversity and secure the win.
