Mary Allen Wilkes: A Pioneer of Personal Computing
Mary Allen Wilkes (born September 25, 1937) is a lawyer and former computer programmer and logic designer best known for her work on the LINC computer. Many now recognize the LINC as one of the world’s first personal computers.
Wilkes graduated from Wellesley College in 1959 with a degree in philosophy. Initially intending to pursue a law career, she was discouraged by the challenges women faced in the legal profession at the time. She subsequently found work as a programmer at MIT in 1959, despite having no prior programming experience – a common situation in the early days of computing.
Contributions to the LINC Computer
At MIT, Wilkes joined the Digital Computer Group and contributed to the design of the LINC (Laboratory Instrument Computer) beginning in June 1961. Her contributions included simulating the LINC’s operation on the TX-2 computer, designing the console for the prototype, and writing the operator’s manual for the final console design. The LINC was a groundbreaking machine, considered by many to be the first interactive personal computer, capable of fitting in a single office and costing around $40,000 in the 1960s.
In 2015, Wilkes was recognized for her contributions at an exhibition honoring women in computing at the Heinz Nixdorf Museum in Paderborn, Germany, where the LINC was on display. She delivered a speech in German at the opening, demonstrating her versatility and dedication.
Wilkes later pursued a law degree and became an attorney in 1975.
