Lev Parnas, Impeachment Figure, Launches Primary Challenge to Rep. María Elvira Salazar

Lev Parnas, a central figure in the first impeachment inquiry of former President Donald Trump, has announced his candidacy for Florida’s 27th Congressional District, challenging incumbent Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar. Parnas is running as a Democrat.

From Trump Associate to Political Challenger

Parnas rose to prominence in 2019 when it was revealed he played a key role in efforts to pressure Ukrainian officials to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, at the behest of then-President Trump and his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. He was later convicted in 2021 on campaign finance violations related to illegal foreign contributions to Republican campaigns, including a $325,000 contribution to America First Action, a pro-Trump Super PAC, funded by a Russian oligarch The Hill.

Despite his criminal past, Parnas is eligible to run for Congress in Florida, as state law does not prevent those with felony convictions from seeking office. WLRN

Campaign Platform and Background

In his campaign announcement, Parnas stated his focus will be on “cleaning up Washington’s corruption, holding the powerful to account, strengthening affordability, expanding support for seniors, and improving our desperately broken immigration system.” He emphasized the economic challenges facing families in Florida’s 27th District, citing rising costs of living. Born in the former Soviet Union to Jewish refugee parents, Parnas immigrated to the United States at age three. He highlighted this shared experience with many residents of Miami-Dade County. Florida Politics

Parnas’s Evolution and Criticism of Trump

Parnas, once a staunch supporter of Trump, has become a vocal critic. He now runs the Substack blog “Lev Remembers,” where he regularly denounces the former president and his administration. Florida Politics

In a recent screening of the documentary “From Russia with Lev,” Parnas described his past involvement with Trump as being part of a “cult” and claimed he was indoctrinated. He stated he “woke up” after being pulled into the political scandal. Miami Herald

Other Candidates and Context

Parnas joins a crowded field of Democratic candidates seeking to unseat Salazar. Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council staffer who also testified during Trump’s impeachment inquiry, is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida. WLRN, Miami Herald
