Harry Styles Upstages Ryan Gosling on Saturday Night Live
Ryan Gosling’s recent hosting gig on Saturday Night Live took an unexpected turn when Harry Styles made a surprise appearance during his monologue. The incident occurred on March 7, just one week before Styles is set to host the show himself.
A Monologue Interrupted
Gosling began his monologue by acknowledging the pleasant weather in New York City in early March, before noticing Styles in the audience. “Is that Harry Styles?” he asked, prompting a wave of applause and attention towards the Grammy-winning artist.
Styles Explains His Presence
Styles explained his impromptu visit, stating, “Well, I’m hosting next week and it’s been a although, so I just wanted to watch and secure a sense for it.” Gosling playfully responded, “So professional, that’s awesome. I just wish someone would have told me.”
The Monologue Takes a Turn
Styles’ presence continued to playfully disrupt Gosling’s monologue. Gosling jokingly referred to his new movie, Project Hail Mary, as “Project Harry Styles.” When Gosling attempted to discuss his passion for space-themed films, the camera repeatedly focused on Styles, leading Gosling to quip, “Why are we on Harry Styles?” Styles responded with a deadpan, “I don’t know, I’m just listening.”
A Reluctant Rendition of “Sign of the Times”
The situation escalated when a planned sketch was abandoned after cast member Sarah Sherman rushed towards Styles in the audience. Gosling then unexpectedly performed a rendition of Styles’ hit song, “Sign of the Times,” while Styles watched from the front row. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the performance was somewhat reluctant, born out of the disruption.
A Pattern of Surprise Guests
As noted by Late Night, this isn’t the first time Gosling has been joined by a surprise guest during his SNL monologues. Previous appearances have included Mike Myers in 2015, Emma Stone in 2017, and Emily Blunt in 2024.
Styles’ Upcoming Hosting Gig
Harry Styles is scheduled to host Saturday Night Live next week, taking on the dual role of host and musical guest. E! Online reports that his surprise appearance was a preview of his return to Studio 8H.
