French Man Sentenced for Rape of 98-Year-Traditional Woman in Lelystad
A 35-year-old French man has been sentenced to six years in prison for the rape of a 98-year-old woman in Lelystad, Netherlands, in May 2020. The incident involved a home invasion where the suspect demanded money before assaulting the victim.
Details of the Crime
According to court documents, the suspect, who was 34 years old at the time of the incident, forcibly entered the victim’s home after knocking on her door. He allegedly demanded money and then proceeded to repeatedly rape and assault her. The victim, due to her age and physical limitations, was unable to fight back.
The suspect claimed the sexual encounter was consensual, but the court rejected this assertion. The victim sustained multiple injuries, including trauma to the site of her pacemaker, and is currently receiving ongoing psychological support at the Center for Sexual Violence. While symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder were present, a formal diagnosis was deemed premature by her case worker.
Sentencing and Compensation
The six-year sentence was one year longer than the five years recommended by the Public Prosecution Service, reflecting the severity of the crime. The suspect was also ordered to pay 10,000 euros in compensation to the victim, with the possibility of this amount being increased.
