Global Virus Network Launches International Headquarters at University of South Florida
Tampa, FL – March 11, 2026 – The Global Virus Network (GVN), a coalition of leading virologists from over 40 countries, has officially established its International Headquarters at the University of South Florida (USF) Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation (ITVI). This strategic partnership aims to accelerate research, strengthen pandemic preparedness, and foster collaboration in the face of emerging viral threats.
A Hub for Global Collaboration
The opening of the International Headquarters, formalized on March 5, 2026, represents a significant milestone for the GVN and USF Health. The ITVI, a GVN Center of Excellence, will serve as the central hub connecting over 90 Centers of Excellence and Affiliates worldwide [1, 2]. This network comprises eminent human and animal virologists dedicated to advancing research, collaboration, and pandemic preparedness.
USF’s Role in Pandemic Preparedness
USF was selected to host the GVN’s International Headquarters in 2024, solidifying its position as a leader in global health innovation [1]. The partnership will facilitate collaborations in education and training, investigation and research, advocacy, and thought leadership. USF Health will similarly establish the USF Health Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation as the North American Flagship GVN Center of Excellence, furthering the network’s mission.
GVN’s Mission and Core Pillars
Founded fifteen years ago, following lessons learned from the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the GVN was created to unite the world’s foremost virologists in a permanent, independent scientific network [3]. The GVN’s mission is to ensure and facilitate global pandemic preparedness for viral diseases that pose a threat to public health. This is achieved through three core pillars:
- Enhancing scientific research
- Advancing education and training
- Strengthening preparedness and response
The network fosters a coordinated approach to combating viral diseases by collaborating with national and international scientific institutions and governmental organizations [1].
Leadership Perspectives
“We are proud that the Global Virus Network has chosen to establish its International Headquarters at USF, connecting our students, researchers and clinicians with leading virologists and institutions around the world,” said Moez Limayem, PhD, president of the University of South Florida [2]. “USF is deeply committed to supporting GVN’s global mission, and we are excited to host this international hub for virology and pandemic preparedness.”
Looking Ahead
The establishment of the GVN’s International Headquarters at USF marks a critical step in strengthening global defenses against viral threats. By uniting leading scientists and fostering collaboration, the GVN and USF are poised to accelerate research, improve pandemic preparedness, and protect public health worldwide [4].
