Australia Bolsters Naval Capabilities with $176 Million Investment in Uncrewed Vessels

The Australian government is investing $176 million in the acquisition of 40 additional Bluebottle uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), significantly expanding the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) capacity for maritime surveillance and undersea warfare. This investment brings the total number of Bluebottles contracted to 55, establishing one of the world’s largest sovereign USV fleets.

Enhanced Maritime Security

The Albanese Government announced the contract with Ocius Technology on March 11, 2026, highlighting the initiative as a key component of Australia’s National Defence Strategy. The Bluebottle USVs are designed to provide persistent, long-range intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities across Australia’s extensive maritime domain.

Bluebottle USV: A Cutting-Edge Platform

Developed in partnership with the RAN and initially funded through the Defence Innovation Hub, the Bluebottle is a long-endurance USV powered by a combination of solar, wind, and wave energy. It is capable of both surface and sub-surface surveillance, payload delivery, and integrated operation within a larger maritime force. Naval News reports that the type of sonar suite or towed acoustic array is not yet disclosed, but Thales Australia’s BlueSentry appears a likely candidate.

Economic Benefits and Industry Collaboration

The investment is expected to create 50 jobs at Ocius Technology’s advanced manufacturing facility in Sydney, with additional production capacity planned for the NSW Hunter region. The expansion will too generate opportunities for minor and medium-sized Australian businesses throughout the supply chain. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized that the Bluebottle represents a successful collaboration between Defence and industry, delivering cutting-edge capabilities.

Undersea Warfare Focus

The primary purpose of the expanded Bluebottle fleet is to enhance the RAN’s undersea warfare capabilities. According to reports, a teaming agreement between Thales Australia and Ocius Technologies in 2022 advanced the development and deployment of USVs equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and surveillance missions. Demonstrations during Autonomous Warrior 2023 showcased Bluebottles equipped with Thales Australia’s Blue Sentry thin-line towed array sonars working alongside USVDIV-1 vessels to track a submarine simulator.
