Microsoft is making strides to expand the accessibility of its gaming library, with plans to enable PC play for original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles. This initiative coincides with the development of its next-generation Xbox console, Project Helix, with prototype kits slated for developer distribution in 2027.
Expanding the Xbox Ecosystem to PC
During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) on March 11, 2026, Microsoft’s Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation, Xbox, revealed the company’s efforts to make older Xbox games playable on PC [Xbox Wire]. This move aims to allow players to access their digitally purchased Xbox and Xbox 360 games through their Microsoft accounts on PC, potentially including classics like Ninja Gaiden Black and Crimson Skies. This strategy aligns with Microsoft’s broader vision of blurring the lines between its console and PC gaming platforms.
Project Helix: The Next Generation of Xbox
Microsoft is currently developing Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console. The console is designed to play both Xbox and PC games, delivering high performance and ushering in a new era of console gaming [Xbox Wire]. Project Helix will utilize a custom AMD System on a Chip (SoC) and is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technologies.
According to Ronald, Project Helix will deliver “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” integrate intelligence into the graphics and compute pipeline and improve efficiency, scale, and visual ambition [Xbox Wire]. The result is expected to be more realistic and immersive gaming experiences.
Developer Prototypes in 2027
Microsoft plans to ship prototype kits of the next-generation Xbox to developers in 2027 [CNBC]. This will allow developers to begin creating and optimizing games for the new hardware. The console will continue to leverage AMD silicon, as seen in the Xbox Series X and Series S [CNBC].
