Yankees Prospect Brock Selvidge to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Misses 2026 Season

New York Yankees pitching prospect Brock Selvidge will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2026 season, MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo reports. The left-handed pitcher suffered the injury during spring training.

Selvidge’s Career Trajectory

Selvidge, drafted by the Yankees in the third round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft from Hamilton HS (Chandler, AZ), was ranked as the 12th best prospect in the Yankees farm system heading into the 2026 season by MLB.com. He had shown potential as a future fourth or fifth starter, possessing a five-pitch arsenal including a four-seamer, cutter, and sweeper.

Recent Performance and Injury History

In 2025, Selvidge appeared in 19 games (18 starts) for the Somerset Patriots, posting a 2-7 record with a 4.68 ERA over 82.2 innings pitched. He recorded 68 strikeouts and a 1.43 WHIP. Despite a strong spring training showing in 2026, with two scoreless innings and a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the elbow injury halted his progress.

Selvidge has faced injury challenges in recent years. He was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Futures Game due to a pinched nerve in his left biceps. Prior to that, he experienced a decline in performance in 2024, with a 7.29 ERA over his final 21 innings before being placed on the injured list and ultimately undergoing surgery in September of that year.

Impact on the Yankees Organization

Selvidge’s absence does not affect the Yankees’ major league roster or injured list status, as he is not on the 40-man roster. The Yankees currently have several pitchers on the injured list, including Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt. Veterans Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn, along with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers, Luis Gil, and Will Warren, provide depth. Prospects Elmer Rodríguez and Carlos Lagrange are similarly potential candidates for a call-up later in the season.

Recovery and Future Outlook

Selvidge’s recovery from Tommy John surgery is expected to seize approximately 12-18 months. He will be facing a three-year period with limited innings pitched, having thrown only 167 2/3 innings over the past three seasons despite being a starting pitcher. His return to the mound is anticipated sometime in 2027.
