AI Chatbots Evolve Beyond Text: Claude and ChatGPT Embrace Visual Learning

The landscape of artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, with leading chatbots moving beyond simple text-based interactions to incorporate dynamic visual learning tools. Both Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT have recently introduced updates that allow them to generate and utilize interactive visualizations, signaling a shift towards more sophisticated and helpful AI systems.

ChatGPT Gains Interactive Learning Features

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled new capabilities for ChatGPT focused on interactive learning, particularly in math and science. A blog post “New ways to learn math and science with ChatGPT” details how users can now explore concepts with dynamic visual explanations.

The update introduces over 70 core math and science concepts that ChatGPT can explain alongside interactive visual modules. Users can adjust variables, manipulate formulas, and observe the real-time impact on graphs and outcomes, transforming abstract equations into tangible experiments. These features are available globally across all subscription plans.

Specific areas of expertise for ChatGPT’s interactive learning feature include:

  • Binomial square
  • Charles’ law
  • Circle area and equation
  • Compound interest
  • Cone surface area and volume
  • Coulomb’s law
  • Cylinder volume
  • Degrees of freedom
  • Difference of squares
  • Exponential decay
  • Hooke’s law
  • Kinetic energy
  • Lens equation
  • Linear equation
  • Ohm’s law
  • Period–frequency relation
  • Potential energy
  • PV = nRT equation
  • Pythagorean theorem
  • Slope–intercept form
  • Surface area of sphere
  • Triangle area
  • Trig angle sum identity

OpenAI plans to expand these interactive learning features to additional subjects in the future.

Claude Embraces Visual Responses

Anthropic is also enhancing Claude’s capabilities with visual responses. Announced on Thursday, Claude can now create interactive charts, diagrams, and visualizations directly within its chat conversations.

Building on a preview of “Imagine with Claude” from last fall, the new feature, currently in beta, allows Claude to generate custom visuals without requiring any coding. The AI chatbot will automatically determine when a visual response would be beneficial, and users can then tweak and modify the creations as the conversation progresses. The feature is enabled by default.

A Maturation of AI Systems

These updates from both OpenAI and Anthropic demonstrate a significant maturation of AI systems, moving beyond the initial text-only interface that characterized the early stages of the large language model revolution. Both companies are responding to user needs for more engaging and effective learning experiences, and are positioning their chatbots as versatile tools for exploration and understanding.

Recent events, including a shift in App Store rankings, show Claude surpassing ChatGPT in downloads following controversy surrounding OpenAI’s Pentagon contract, and a user boycott of ChatGPT after the deal with the US Department of War, highlight the growing competition and user preference for AI systems aligned with ethical considerations.
