I-471 in Northern Kentucky Remains Closed After Tanker Explosion, No Fatalities Reported

Newport, KY – March 14, 2026 – All lanes of I-471 in Northern Kentucky remain closed following a significant explosion Friday night caused by a collision between a vehicle and a gas tanker. While the incident prompted a large emergency response, officials have confirmed no fatalities have been reported.

Details of the Incident

The explosion occurred shortly after 10 p.m. On I-471 near Memorial Parkway in Newport, Kentucky. Fire crews from both Northern Kentucky and Ohio responded to the scene, battling a large fire and plume of smoke. According to the Cincinnati Fire Department, the incident began with a crash between a gas tanker and another vehicle.

No Fatalities, Minor Injuries Reported

The Campbell County Coroner’s Office announced via social media that all individuals involved in the crash have been accounted for, and there were no fatalities. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear stated on Saturday morning that minor injuries were sustained in the crash and subsequent explosion.

Road Closures and Repair Efforts

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-471, as well as Memorial Parkway, are currently closed. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is assessing the damage and working on repairs. Crews are actively re-milling and repaving the southbound lanes of the interstate. Bridge inspectors are also evaluating the Memorial Parkway overpass, which was affected by the flames.

The Campbell County Office of Emergency Management has not provided a specific timeline for when I-471 and Memorial Parkway will reopen. KYTC stated that traffic lanes and bridges will reopen following analysis by bridge engineers.
