Vaison-la-Romaine Firefighter Retires After 42 Years of Service
Vaison-la-Romaine recently honored Adjudant-Chef Philippe Pipard on his retirement after 42 years of dedicated service to the community as a firefighter. The ceremony, attended by family, colleagues, and friends, celebrated a career marked by bravery, skill, and a commitment to public safety.
Early Career and Mountain Rescue
Pipard began his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1984, playing a key role in establishing the first mountain rescue team in the Drôme region in 1984-1986. This early experience laid the foundation for a career often spent responding to challenging and dangerous situations.
Significant Interventions
Throughout his career, Pipard participated in numerous large-scale operations, including the Lozère forest fire, the Chevalier sawmill fire, the Sériplast fire in Vaison, and the Caderousse floods. A particularly harrowing incident occurred on March 27, 2023, when he was injured and hospitalized following an explosion involving a gas truck in Sablet.
Champion Firefighter and Mountain Climber
Pipard’s dedication extended beyond operational duties. He excelled in firefighter sports, becoming the French indoor firefighting champion in 2006 and 2007. He also participated in the Challenge des Uniformes in Barcelonnette and had the honor of marching on the Champs-Élysées on June 22, 2007.
Demonstrating his passion for climbing and the mountains, Pipard completed a remarkable ascent of the Barre des Écrins (4,102m) in 2007, running from the valley with support from a Vaison firefighter team providing supplies.
Training and Mentorship
Since 2017, Pipard served as a trainer, imparting essential “self-rescue and rescuer rescue” techniques – a critical component of firefighter training. His commitment was recognized with the award of the firefighter honor medal, bronze and silver levels.
A Lasting Message
Upon his retirement, Pipard shared a message with his fellow firefighters: “Live in the present. Enjoy every shift, every intervention behind the truck, when you hold the lance… enjoy this beautiful fire station. We must detach ourselves from work, but it’s not always easy. When you are at the station, you are a firefighter, and you should only think about that.”
