MacBook Neo: Apple’s Most Repairable Laptop in Years
Apple’s fresh MacBook Neo is garnering attention not only for its affordability but also for its significantly improved repairability, marking a departure from previous MacBook designs. According to a recent teardown by iFixit, the MacBook Neo is the most repairable MacBook in approximately fourteen years.
The Battery: A Major Step Forward
The most significant improvement lies in the battery design. Unlike older MacBook models where batteries are often glued into place, the MacBook Neo’s battery is secured by a tray and 18 screws. IFixit noted that “screws still beat adhesive every time,” and this change was met with enthusiasm within the repair community.
Enhanced Design for Easier Repairs
Beyond the battery, several other design choices contribute to the MacBook Neo’s increased repairability. These include a simplified disassembly tree, a layout that allows for easier access to key components, and a reported ability for Apple’s Repair Assistant to accept replacement parts without issue. The display and keyboard are also reportedly easier to replace than in previous models.
Modular Components and Accessibility
iFixit’s teardown revealed a “shockingly sensible” internal layout, with easy access to the battery, speakers, USB-C ports, and trackpad – components often buried under other parts in more recent MacBooks. The USB-C ports are modular, meaning damaged ports can be replaced without requiring a full logic board repair, a common and costly issue in previous models. The headphone jack also benefits from this modular design.
Compromises and Repairability Score
Despite the improvements, the MacBook Neo isn’t perfect. RAM and storage remain soldered to the A18 Pro chip, limiting upgradeability and impacting the overall repairability score. IFixit gave the MacBook Neo a repairability score of 6 out of 10, which, for a MacBook, is considered a strong score.
Future Implications
Apple’s design choices with the MacBook Neo may be influenced by upcoming EU regulations requiring user-replaceable batteries in portable devices by early 2027. This could lead to similar battery designs in future MacBook Air and Pro models, further enhancing repairability across the product line.
