Interstate 29 and 90 Closed in South Dakota Due to Blizzard Conditions

PIERRE, S.D. – Sections of Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 in South Dakota are closed as of Saturday, March 14, 2026, due to a severe winter storm bringing heavy snow and strong winds. The closures are intended to protect motorists from hazardous driving conditions, including snow-covered roads, blocked bridges and underpasses, and significantly reduced visibility.

Interstate Closures

The following closures are in effect as of Saturday, March 14, 2026:

  • Interstate 29 (Northbound & Southbound): From Watertown (Exit 177) to the North Dakota state line, beginning at 9 p.m. CT.
  • Interstate 29 (Northbound & Southbound): From Watertown (Exit 177) to Brookings (Exit 133), beginning at 10:30 p.m. CT.
  • Interstate 29 (Northbound & Southbound): From Brookings (Exit 133) to Sioux Falls (I-90, Exit 84), beginning at 12 a.m. CT.
  • Interstate 90 (Eastbound & Westbound): From Wall (Exit 110) to Sioux Falls (Marion Road, Exit 395), beginning at 11 p.m. MT / 12 a.m. CT.

State Highway Closures

In addition to the Interstate closures, state highways are also being closed in phases. Details can be found on the SD511 website. The following phased closures are scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026:

  • East of the Missouri River and north of U.S. Highway 212 at 9 p.m. CT.
  • East of the Missouri River and north of U.S. Highway 14 at 10:30 p.m. CT.
  • East of the Missouri River and north of I-90 at 12 a.m. CT.
  • West of the Missouri River between S.D. Highway 34 / U.S. Highway 14 and I-90 to S.D. Highway 73 at 12 a.m. CT.

Travel Advisories

Several counties have issued travel advisories as of March 15, 2026, including:

  • Walworth County: No Travel Advised
  • Roberts County: No Travel Advised
  • Day County: No Travel Advised
  • Clark County: No Travel Advised
  • Spink County: No Travel Advised
  • Hyde County: No Travel Advised
  • Faulk County: No Travel Advised
  • Codington County: No Travel Advised

Deuel, Davison, Grant, and Hamlin counties have closed roads.

Stay Informed

Motorists are advised not to leverage secondary highways and local roads to circumvent Interstate closures, as conditions on those routes are also hazardous. The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) anticipates some Interstate and state highway closures may remain in effect throughout Sunday, March 15, 2026, depending on snowfall and wind conditions.
