Plovdiv, Bulgaria: A Hub for Innovation and Carbon Neutrality by 2040

Plovdiv, Bulgaria is emerging as a key center for innovation and sustainable development, with ambitious goals to become a leading high-tech and carbon-neutral region by 2040. Recent initiatives and investments are positioning the city and surrounding Trakia Economic Zone (TEZ) at the forefront of Bulgaria’s efforts to build a sustainable innovation ecosystem and achieve European goals for smart specialization, strategic autonomy, digital and green transition.

Building a Sustainable Innovation Ecosystem

A round table entitled “Innovations.bg 2040” took place at the Congress Centre of the Trakia Economic Zone in Plovdiv on June 27, 2025, launching a series of events aimed at fostering innovation in Bulgaria [BTA]. The event brought together key stakeholders including Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov, TEZ Founder Plamen Panchev, Deputy Innovation and Growth Minister Martin Danovski, and Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria.

Mayor Dimitrov emphasized Plovdiv’s role as a platform for high-tech growth and pledged the municipality’s active partnership in building innovative leadership in the region. The Trakia Economic Zone, home to over 200 Bulgarian and international companies employing over 80,000 people, is central to this vision [BTA].

Yordanka Chobanova highlighted the rapid pace of change impacting the world of work and business, stating that these changes will shape the future of Bulgaria and Europe in the coming years [BTA]. Plamen Panchev noted that innovation is already happening and extending beyond theoretical frameworks, emphasizing the importance of Bulgaria’s partnership with Europe [BTA].

Trakia Economic Zone’s Carbon Neutrality Goal

The Trakia Economic Zone is aiming to become the first carbon-neutral industrial zone in Europe by 2040 [Balkan Green Energy News]. The management of the zone hopes these measures will attract strategic investment.

The initiative began in 2012 with the construction of a photovoltaic plant, and has evolved into a comprehensive strategy for emissions reduction [Balkan Green Energy News]. In May 2023, the zone published its Carbon Neutrality and Sustainability Charter, endorsed by 22 companies [Balkan Green Energy News]. Companies within the zone are tasked with striving for carbon independence and implementing carbon accounting practices.

Schneider Electric’s Smart Factory and Geothermal System

Further demonstrating Plovdiv’s commitment to sustainability, Schneider Electric Bulgaria opened the first-of-its-kind industrial geothermal system in its Smart Factory in Plovdiv on June 13, 2025 [Asadria.com]. The system utilizes a “dry” closed borehole process, providing over 70% savings in electricity for heating and cooling and contributing to the company’s carbon neutrality goals [Asadria.com].
