Amazon S3 Celebrates 20 Years of Cloud Storage Innovation
This past week marked the 20th anniversary of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), launched publicly on March 14, 2006. What began as a basic object storage service has evolved into a foundational element of cloud infrastructure, now storing over 500 trillion objects and serving more than 200 million requests per second globally.
From Humble Beginnings to Cloud Cornerstone
Initially offering approximately one petabyte of total storage capacity across 400 storage nodes, Amazon S3 has dramatically scaled over the past two decades. The cost of storage has also decreased significantly, now at just over 2 cents per gigabyte – an approximately 85% reduction since its inception. The service’s impact is highlighted by accounts of early adopters who helped shape the future of Amazon Web Services and paved the way for advancements in artificial intelligence.
New Features Enhance S3 Capabilities
Alongside the anniversary, Amazon announced new features designed to improve S3’s functionality and security. Account regional namespaces for Amazon S3 general purpose buckets allow users to create buckets within their own account’s regional namespace, ensuring unique bucket names are always reserved. This is enforced through AWS IAM policies and AWS Organizations service control policies using the new s3:x-amz-bucket-namespace condition key.
Amazon Route 53 Global Resolver Now Generally Available
Also launched this week is the general availability of Amazon Route 53 Global Resolver, an internet-reachable anycast DNS resolver. Available across 30 AWS Regions and supporting both IPv4 and IPv6, it provides DNS resolution for authorized clients from any location. Global Resolver also offers DNS query filtering to block malicious domains and protect against advanced DNS threats like DNS tunneling and Domain Generation Algorithms (DGA), with added protection against Dictionary DGA threats now available with general availability.
Other AWS Launches
- Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime: Now supports stateful MCP server features, enabling developers to build more sophisticated conversational AI applications.
- Amazon WorkSpaces: New bundles powered by Microsoft Windows Server 2025 offer enhanced security features like TPM 2.0 and Secured-core server.
