NATO Increases Air and Missile Defense Readiness on Eastern Flank

NATO has elevated its missile defense alert to the highest level and increased the readiness of air and missile defense systems across its Eastern Flank, according to Bulgaria’s caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov. The move comes amid heightened regional tensions, though NATO officials emphasize the actions are not directly related to the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Increased Alert Levels

Zapryanov announced the increased readiness during a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Graf Ignatievo air base near Plovdiv on March 17, 2026. He stated that while NATO is not participating in the U.S. And Israeli operation against Iran, Eastern Flank member states are maintaining a high level of preparedness.
