HDI Global Japan Focuses on Cyber Insurance Growth Amid Rising Threats
Many Japanese firms remain underinsured despite increasing exposure to cyber incidents, prompting HDI Global SE’s Japan unit to expand its cyber insurance capabilities while maintaining underwriting discipline. This strategic move comes as companies grapple with escalating digital threats and insurers aim to protect profitability.
Rising Cyber Risks in Japan
According to Hiro Yamasaki, Managing Director and Legal Representative of HDI Global SE Japan, cyber risk is rapidly becoming one of the most significant threats facing businesses today. He emphasized the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks, which can lead to severe operational disruptions. “Cyber-risk is definitely one of the fastest-evolving risks for businesses today,” Yamasaki told Insurance Asia. “The frequency and sophistication of attacks continue to increase and the potential business interruption impact can be severe.”
Underinsurance and Market Opportunity
Despite the growing threat, a significant gap exists in cyber insurance coverage among Japanese companies. A study by Aon Plc revealed that over a quarter of organizations in Japan have experienced cyber-related losses. Though, a concerning number lack formal business continuity plans, potentially impacting insurance coverage and claim outcomes. Yamasaki stresses the need for a holistic approach to cyber risk, encompassing not only insurance capacity but also continuous risk management.
HDI Global’s Strategy
Yamasaki, who assumed his role at the beginning of 2026, outlined the company’s plan to strengthen its cyber offerings for corporate clients while maintaining its focus on core commercial insurance lines. HDI Global primarily serves large commercial and industrial companies in Japan, particularly in sectors like manufacturing and multinational operations, where property and liability insurance are crucial for managing operational risks.
Strengthening Partnerships and Leveraging Technology
HDI Global aims to differentiate itself through technical underwriting expertise and disciplined risk selection. The company is also focused on deepening relationships with brokers and agents, fostering more structured discussions and clearer communication to enhance collaboration and develop tailored insurance solutions. HDI Global’s extensive international network, spanning over 170 countries, provides a significant advantage for Japanese companies operating globally.
Technology will play an increasingly important role in underwriting and risk assessment. HDI Global is investing in data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to accelerate and improve decision-making, while retaining the expertise of its specialists. “Balanced growth and sustainable profitability come from technical excellence, disciplined underwriting, and strong partnerships,” Yamasaki stated.
Leadership Transition
Hiro Yamasaki succeeded Casey Sandler as Managing Director of the Japanese branch in January 2026. Sandler, who had been managing the branch on an interim basis since August 2025, has pursued other career opportunities. Insurance Asia reported that Yamasaki brings over 25 years of experience in commercial property & casualty underwriting, portfolio management, and international leadership.
