Road Safety Concerns Rise in Ireland Amidst Increase in Traffic Offences
Ireland is facing growing concerns over road safety, with a notable increase in drivers detected for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, and drugs. Recent data reveals a worrying trend despite increased enforcement efforts and public awareness campaigns.
Disappointing Rise in Offences
The Garda Press Office has expressed disappointment with the number of drivers engaging in dangerous behaviours on Irish roads. Superintendent Liam Geraghty of the Garda Press Office reported that over 200 arrests were made in the past seven days for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs . This figure is considered particularly concerning given the ongoing public discourse surrounding road safety and the recent implementation of increased enforcement measures.
Speeding Incidents Surge
Alongside the rise in impaired driving, speeding offences have also seen a significant increase. Gardaí anticipate detecting over 5,000 speeding drivers in the last seven days, a substantial jump from the average of 500 per day in 2025 . One particularly alarming incident involved a driver travelling at 112 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre zone on the R183 in Monaghan .
Road Fatalities and Public Disconnect
Since a road safety conference held last Wednesday in Kerry, six people have lost their lives on Irish roads . Superintendent Geraghty highlighted a perceived disconnect between public acknowledgement of the severity of road safety issues and actual driver behaviour. Surveys indicate that 12% of Irish motorists admit to driving under the influence of alcohol, while over 25% believe driving a short distance after consuming alcohol is acceptable .
Garda Resources and Personal Responsibility
An Garda Síochána currently has 647 personnel dedicated to roads policing, representing the largest specialist unit within the force . However, Superintendent Geraghty emphasized that even with a fully deployed force, complete road coverage is impossible. He stressed the importance of personal responsibility and safe driving practices by all road users.
Recent Garda Press Office Activity
Superintendent Liam Geraghty also recently discussed a new Garda recruitment drive that raises the age limit to 50 . He was also involved in a case concerning the arrest of a senior garda in January 2026, which was deemed a significant event of national interest, prompting the issuance of press releases .
