iPhone 17e Teardown Reveals MagSafe Upgrade Path for iPhone 16e Owners

The iPhone 17e, Apple’s latest low-cost iPhone, brings a key feature missing from its predecessor: MagSafe. A recent teardown by iFixit reveals that iPhone 16e owners may be able to add MagSafe functionality to their devices simply by swapping the back panel.

iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e: A Familiar Design with a Crucial Difference

The iPhone 17e shares a remarkably similar design with the iPhone 16e. This similarity is significant because iFixit’s teardown confirmed the back panel of the iPhone 17e is interchangeable with the iPhone 16e. Essentially, replacing the iPhone 16e’s back panel with the iPhone 17e’s version would add MagSafe capabilities. IPhone 16e cases are also compatible with the iPhone 17e.

MagSafe Functionality: What iPhone 16e Owners Need to Realize

Although the hardware upgrade is straightforward, there are a few considerations for iPhone 16e users. The iPhone 16e doesn’t natively support MagSafe, meaning it lacks the software to recognize MagSafe accessories and display the expected animations. It remains unclear whether swapping the back panel will enable the full 15W MagSafe charging speed.

Currently, the iPhone 16e supports Qi wireless charging, which tops out at 7.5W. Achieving the 15W MagSafe charging speed would be a significant benefit, but even without it, the convenience of using MagSafe accessories is a compelling upgrade.

Apple’s Strategy with the iPhone 17e

The iPhone 16e proved to be a surprisingly popular device despite initial skepticism regarding its specifications and pricing. Apple appears to be targeting customers who desire an iPhone experience without the cost of flagship models. The iPhone 17e builds upon this foundation with a faster chip (A19), a more modern modem (C1X), increased base storage (256GB), and the addition of MagSafe. Beyond these improvements, the device remains largely unchanged.

Repairability Remains a Focus

The iPhone 17e maintains the repair-friendly design of the iPhone 16e, featuring a dual-entry design that allows access from both the front and back. This simplifies battery and display replacements, a feature that has been removed from the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. Apple also continues to use adhesive for the battery that can be removed with an electrical pulse, further streamlining the replacement process.
