University Health Vida: Expanding Healthcare Access on San Antonio’s South Side

A new era of healthcare is dawning on San Antonio’s South Side with the opening of University Health Vida, a comprehensive health center designed to address critical access gaps and improve the well-being of the community. Located across from Texas A&M University-San Antonio at 3611 Jaguar Parkway, the facility offers a wide range of services, from urgent care to specialized medical treatments.

Comprehensive Services at University Health Vida

University Health Vida provides a holistic approach to healthcare, integrating various services under one roof. Key offerings include:

  • Urgent Care: Available seven days a week to address immediate medical needs.
  • Primary and Specialty Care: Providing ongoing medical attention and specialized treatments for adults and children.
  • Behavioral Health Services: Addressing mental and emotional well-being for both adults and adolescents.
  • Pharmacy: Offering convenient access to prescriptions for patients and the broader community.
  • Imaging and Lab Testing: Providing on-site diagnostic capabilities.

Community Focus and the Institute for Public Health

Beyond clinical care, University Health Vida is home to the University Health’s Institute for Public Health and its “Community Commons.” This innovative initiative brings together numerous nonprofit organizations on-site to address non-medical factors that impact health, such as food insecurity and social support. University Health highlights this integrated approach as crucial for improving overall community health.

Grand Opening Event and Community Outreach

On Sunday, March 22nd, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, University Health is hosting a free community event to showcase the new Vida Clinic. Attendees can expect:

  • Food distribution from the San Antonio Food Bank and River City Produce.
  • Flu shots.
  • Health resources from local nonprofits.
  • Art activities and refreshments.
  • Guided tours of the facility.

Part of a Larger Expansion: The Palo Alto Hospital Campus

University Health Vida is the first building on the future Palo Alto Hospital campus, a 68-acre complex slated for completion by 2027. KSAT News reported that the center broke ground in December 2023 and is considered a significant step forward for healthcare access on the South Side. The facility welcomed its first patient in November 2025.

A Game Changer for the South Side

Ed Banos, President and CEO of University Health, described University Health Vida as a “game changer” for the South Side, comparing its impact to that of other major institutions in the area, such as Texas A&M–San Antonio and Palo Alto College. Live From The South Side emphasizes the facility’s role in bringing both improved healthcare and economic opportunity to the region.
