Rivian and Uber Partner to Develop Robotaxi Fleet

Rivian and Uber announced a partnership on Thursday, March 14, 2026, to develop a fleet of robotaxis based on Rivian’s upcoming R2 SUV. The deal has the potential to be worth up to $1.25 billion for Rivian, marking a significant step towards the commercialization of autonomous ride-hailing services.

Partnership Details

Uber will initially invest $300 million in Rivian and plans to purchase 10,000 fully autonomous R2 vehicles for deployment as robotaxis. The rollout is planned to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028. Uber will have the option to purchase up to 40,000 additional R2 SUVs starting in 2030, with plans to expand the robotaxi network to 25 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Europe by the end of 2031. The robotaxi service will be exclusively available through the Uber network.

Rivian’s Autonomy Technology

Rivian has been heavily investing in autonomous driving technology, shifting its strategy in 2021 to an AI-first approach utilizing large language models. This led to the development of the Rivian Autonomy Platform, which debuted in 2024 in the second-generation R1 vehicles. The platform is designed for incremental capability improvements, starting with hands-free driving on highways and progressing towards point-to-point autonomous navigation expected later in 2026.

The company aims to offer a fully hands-off, eyes-off autonomous experience through a hardware upgrade, including a lidar sensor and an “autonomy computer” capable of processing 5 billion pixels per second. This upgraded hardware will be available in a version of the R2 SUV in late 2026. Rivian is also pursuing “personal L4” autonomy, defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers as a level of automated driving that requires no human intervention within a defined area.

Challenges and Timeline

Despite the ambitious plans, several challenges remain. Rivian has not yet begun production of the R2 SUV, with manufacturing expected to start in June 2026. The company needs to fully test and deploy its self-driving system, and the robotaxis are slated to be built at Rivian’s still-under-construction factory in Georgia.

Broader Context

Rivian is not the only EV manufacturer partnering with Uber on robotaxi development. Lucid Motors is collaborating with Nuro to produce robotaxis based on Lucid’s Gravity SUV, expected to be commercially deployed in San Francisco by the end of 2026. Uber also has existing partnerships with Waymo, Motional, Baidu, and Wayve, demonstrating a broad strategy for incorporating autonomous vehicles into its ride-hailing network.
